Job Description

Position: Library Outreach Student Assistant

Reports to: Outreach & Evening Librarian – Tanner Lewey

Department: Hoover Library

Duration of Appointment: Academic school year

Scope: Assist Outreach & Evening Librarian with the creation, marketing, and implementation of book displays, social media posts, programs, and events. 

Responsibilities:

  • Design and create materials to be shared or displayed in conjunction with library programming and displays
  • Use Canva platform (or other design software such as InDesign or Photoshop) to create digital marketing materials for library events and announcements
  • Under the oversight of the Outreach & Evening Librarian, create, schedule, and share social media content
  • Support and actively demonstrate McDaniel College and Hoover Library’s values dedicated to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
  • Represent Hoover Library and McDaniel College in a positive, respectful manner while interacting with McDaniel’s diverse campus community
  • Complete other duties as assigned by the Outreach & Evening Librarian

Schedule:

  • 4-8 hours a week, Sunday-Thursday, must have availability between 1:00pm - 9:00pm.

Required Qualifications:

  • Current sophomore, junior, or senior student at McDaniel with work study (a few exceptions may be made for first-year students)
  • Able to help design materials, programming, and events that are inclusive of the needs of all community members served by the library
  • Comfortable working with Microsoft Office products and graphic design platforms and with typing, editing, and producing digital materials
  • Able to engage in a repetitive task requiring extensive use of hands (e.g. cutting, folding, and other miscellaneous tasks requiring dexterity)
  • Highly detail-oriented and independent, able to complete a project draft with minimal beginning instructions
  • Experience using a variety of social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok (example posts may be requested)
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Access to a stable internet connection and digital device (laptop, desktop, tablet, etc.) while working virtually

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Graphic Design, Marketing, English, Communications, or Art Major or Minor
  • Strong interest in marketing, outreach, graphic design, event planning, libraries, and/or communication management
  • Demonstrated experience creating and sharing promotional materials (social media, flyers, webpages, etc.). Samples may be requested.

Physical Characteristics:

  • This position requires sitting or standing for long periods of time, as well as some bending and stooping.
  • This position does have some limited lifting involved but not more than 10 pounds at a time.
  • Quite a bit of finger/hand dexterity is involved in regards to handling library materials, and the ability to use a keyboard and mouse is required. The overall setting of the job is in an area conducive to a normal office environment with minimal exposure to adverse conditions.
  • As a part of helping prevent the spread of COVID-19 on the McDaniel College campus, this position will work either virtually from their home/dorm or in a designated Group Study Room on the L or LL floor of Hoover Library. The person in this position will work alone in this library space to which only they will have access.
