Do You Believe in Magic?

by Andrea J. Briggs on 2018-05-01T10:00:00-04:00 | 0 Comments

Growing up, one of my favorite things to read was J. K. Rowling's Harry Potter series. I spent hours dreaming about wizarding world and what it might be like to be a witch, checking the mail every day for my Hogwarts acceptance letter. Now that I'm grown, I no longer dream about attending a magical school - but there are days when my lonely heart wishes I could wave a magic wand and find a magic prince or paladin of my own. Thankfully, there are novels I can read now that allow me to do just that! Whether in the body, in the blood, or in the mind, this month's selections feature magic you can believe in from the first page to the last.

Do You Believe in Magic

If you like: geek-chic, Texas tumbleweeds, number magic

Wizard, byStephanie James

“Sophia Bennett had been raised by geniuses to be locked away in an ivory tower. Instead, she chose to live in Texas, where men were men, and a cowboy’s prowess in barroom brawls and at breaking broncos was more important than any degree. And then Dr. Max Travers strolled into town. He was a professor of mathematics, a friend of her brilliant parents, a wizard. Sophy told herself he was a nerd; that he made love by the numbers; that she preferred cowboys. So why was it that she found Max sexy as all get-out, and infinitely more dangerous than any gunslinger in a Stetson?”

If you like: fantasy, fey, falling in love

Stolen Magic, by Mary Jo Putney

“Simon Malmain, the Earl of Falconer, enforces the law for the Guardians, humans with magical powers derived from nature. A routine mission to confront a rogue Guardian turns disastrous when Simon’s quarry, Lord Drayton, captures his pursuer in a transformation spell. Aid arrives in the form of Meg, a fey young woman who has also ben ensorcelled by Drayton. Bound by the need for each other’s magic, Simon and Meg join forces to defeat the evil Guardian – and in the process unleash the more ancient magic of passion. But even their combined power may not be enough to stave off Drayton’s diabolical plans. Only a desperate act of love may win back the future – or destroy all they hold dear.”

If you like: strong heroines, family secrets, hunks on horses

Dark Witch, by Nora Roberts

“With indifferent parents, Iona Sheehan grew up craving devotion and acceptance. From her maternal grandmother, she learned where to find both: a land of lush forests, dazzling lakes, and centuries-old legends. Ireland. County Mayo, to be exact. Where her ancestor’s blood and magic have flowed through generations – and where her destiny awaits. Iona arrives in Ireland with nothing but her Nan’s directions, an unfailingly optimistic attitude, and an innate talent with horses. Not so far from the luxurious castle where she is spending a week, she finds her cousins, Branna and Connor O’Dwyer. And since family is family, they invite her into their home and their lives. When Iona lands a job at the local stables, she meets the owner, Boyle McGrath. Cowboy, pirate, wild tribal hoseman, he’s three of her biggest fantast weaknesses all in one big, bold package. Iona realizes that here she can make a home for herself – and liver her life as she wants, even if that means falling head over heels for Boyle. But nothing is as it seems. An ancient evil has wound its way around Iona’s family tree and must be defeated. Family and friends will fight with each other and for each other to keep the promise of hope – and love – alive…”
