In October 1991, Western Maryland College officially debuted, Weavings, a historical mural by artist and college alum, Ellen Elmes '69. The artwork featured the many people, traditions, and places associated with the college over the first 125 years of its existence. These icons were interwoven with scenes of national and global significance, emphasizing the interconnectedness of WMC's history amongst a global backdrop. Done in acrylic paint, Elmes created the mural throughout the summer of 1991. It's debut coincided with the dedication of Hoover Library and the college's 125th anniversary. The mural was located just inside the front entrance of the library directly opposite the circulation desk. Additional examples of Elmes' work can be found on the second floor of Hoover Library, across from the Benson classroom.
The presentation below pays tribute to Elmes' artistry by highlighting the many details of the work, adding historical context and archival sources to unpack the history behind this tribute to the college.
