McDaniel College Archives: Special Collections Development Policy

Special Collections encompass rare and/or valuable historic materials that do not have a direct connection to the College's history. Due to space and resource limitations, the Archives is not accepting donations for new special collections. Exceptions will be made for materials that have demonstrable use for the curriculum or research interests of faculty or staff. Such donations must be accompanied by an intention of use statement from a sponsoring faculty or staff member. 

Any other exceptions will be determined at the discretion of the archivist and/or library director. 

The following special collections are maintained by the Archives and Hoover Library, and have individual collection guidelines: 

• Bish Collection: Collection is closed to additions 
• Cornelius Darcy World War I Propaganda Posters: Accepting donations at the discretion of the archivist and/or library director
• Davis Antique Book Collection: Collection is closed to additions
• Gothic Romance Lending Library: Collection is closed to additions. Exceptions will be considered at the discretion of the archivist and/or library director
• Jacobs Marine Biology Books & Articles Collection: Closed to donations 
• J.T. Ward Collection: Closed to donations
• MacCornack Collection: Collection is closed to additions
• McDaniel College Alumni Book Collection: Donations of non-duplicate materials are accepted
• McDaniel College Archives Art Collection: Closed to donations. Exceptions will be considered at the discretion of the archivist and/or library director
• McDaniel College Faculty Publications Collection: Donations of non-duplicated materials are accepted
• McDaniel College Hoover Library Student Art Collection: Additions are chosen by library staff
• McComas Death Mask Collection: Collection is closed to additions
• The Nora Roberts American Romance Collection: Additions to this collection are selected by library staff and faculty advisors. Donations from community members are not accepted. Exceptions will be considered at the discretion of the archivist and/or library director. 
• The Richwine Collection: Additions and donations to this collection are selected by faculty members from the McDaniel College English Department
• Robert L. Worden China Pictorial Collection: Accepting issues from 1996 onward
• Stanton Collection: Collection is open to donations from the following authors: Robert Frost, Ernest Hemingway, Robinson Jeffers, Rockwell Kent, D.H. Lawrence, Sinclair Lewis, H.L. Mencken, Gertrude Stein, John Steinbeck, and Virginia Woolf. First editions or other notable editions are accepted.
• Upman Collection: Closed to donations
• Winter W. Myers Collection: Closed to donations 

Special Collections materials which may fall out of the scope outlined in this policy will be reviewed by the archivist and/or library director on a case-by-case basis.
