Research and Publication: ORCID

ORCID

ORCID (Open Researcher and Contributor Identifier) is an international, interdisciplinary, open, non-profit organization. It aims to maintain a registry of persistent unique researcher identifiers and a transparent method of linking research activities and outputs to these identifiers. ORCID can be used across all disciplines and all countries.

Obtaining an ORCID identifier is free of charge to individuals. The ORCID Registry can be used to manage your record of academic activities, receive ORCID updates and to search for others in the Registry.

ORCID can be linked to a Scopus Author Identifier to improve attribution within Elsevier's Scopus and SciVal databases.

ORCID is also working on expanding its integration with ResearcherID (Thomson Reuters) to allow for the exchange of publication data between the two systems. This integration will allow users to push more information into their publication list, and in turn, continue to improve disambiguation in the database Web of Knowledge.

You can find out more about ORCID on the ORCID website or this article:

ORCID for Faculty/Researchers

Here's how having an ORCID iD can help you get credit for all of your research:

Just one ID

  • ORCID is currently most widely adopted cross-platform identifier
  • ORCID is used by many different publishers, reducing the need for keeping track of different identifiers for each different platform.
  • Your ORCID iD can connect with other scholarly ID systems (like Web of Science and Scopus). Thus you only have to keep track of and use one ID, not several, to search for and link to all your research outputs.

And we do mean all

  • ORCID can track not just your journal articles, but your presentations, videos, pre-prints, and other digital scholarly outputs all in one place.

Am I J. Smith, J. A. Smith, or Jane Ann Smith?

  • Do you have a very common name? Have you published some articles with your middle initial, some with your first and middle initial, and others with your full name? Have you changed your name at some point during your research career?
  • Name differences are NO PROBLEM with ORCID! Collect all of your work in one profile, no matter what name it is under, making it easier for other researchers to find the work you have done.

Today McDaniel, tomorrow the world!

  • Your ORCID iD goes with you wherever you go. If you change positions, titles, departments, or universities, your ORCID iD stays the same.

Submit a manuscript or apply for a grant a grant

  • Is being required by major journal publishers and funders
  • ORCID minimizes the time you spend filling forms when working on research publications and applying for grants.
  • Just enter your ORCID iD in a journal’s online submission system or a grant application and let ORCID fill in the fields for you, saving you the time of data entry.
  • ORCID can also help funding agencies become familiar with your work and research interests, thus facilitating the grant application process.

Save time, save keystrokes

  • When you publish or create a new item with your ORCID iD attached to it, your ORCID profile will be updated to include your new work.

ORCID and Privacy

ORCID users can set certain information to "private"—including their IDs. Learn more about ORCID Privacy Settings.

ORCID is an open, nonprofit, community-driven effort to create and maintain an international system of researcher IDs.

When it comes to publishers and funding agencies, ORCID does not restrict with whom it works. ORCID’s goal is to work with all such entities in order to connect you and your research and to make your scholarship highly discoverable through many different platforms and systems.

The information in your ORCID Record—positions held, articles published, grants received, e-mail addresses, organizations affiliated with—is non-sensitive and available from other, public sources.

What about other research identifiers?

Before ORCID was created, some database vendors, including Web of Science (Thomson Reuters) and Scopus (Elsevier), attempted to identify scholars' specific works and distinguish them from other authors with similar names. These services are now compatible with ORCID. More importantly, ORCID iDs are used more widely.

ORCID iDs are:

  • Cross-disciplinary and not geographically specific.
  • Starting to be used more frequently by publishers in manuscript submissions and data repositories
  • Used by some funding agencies to easily find a scholar's work.
  • And employed by other funders—such as the National Institutes of Health (NIH)--to facilitate forms submission. For example, NIH is integrating ORCID iDs into the new NCBI SciENcv, which automatically generates the required Biosketch.

ORCID for Graduate Students

ORCID helps you build your reputation as an early career researcher

Showcase your accomplishments

  • It’s early in your career as a researcher, so every accomplishment counts
  • Your ORCID iD lets you connect all your professional and scholarly accomplishments and highlight them to colleagues, scholars, academic departments and programs, employers, and funders

Help others find your thesis or dissertation

  • You’ve worked long and hard on your electronic thesis or dissertation (ETD)—now help others find it and learn about your research interests

Let’s collaborate

  • Using your ORCID iD can help others discover your work—and as with other researcher profiling systems, this may lead to collaboration with colleagues—across the country or around the world--who have similar research interests

Submit a manuscript or apply for a grant a grant
