Passwords and Accounts for Library Resources: Password and Account Management

This guide contains information about passwords and accounts used to access various library systems and resources.

The Hoover library provides access to many different kinds of resources, including books, journals, databases, and research tools. Many of these require user accounts with logins and passwords, and some will require a password off-campus, but not on-campus.

Some of these resources use your McDaniel ID and password, but others may require you to create and use an individual account to access or to use additional features.

This guide will help you with navigating these various issues.

Managing your Passwords Securely

Password security is an important issue - you should not share your passwords with others, or leave passwords where others can find them (i.e. don't write your passwords on sticky notes and put them on your desk, don't store them on your phone, etc.)

Fortunately, there are many good options when it comes to password management.

To manage your McDaniel College password, use the ReACT system.

You should also follow each site's guidelines for a "strong" password, which generally means combinations of upper- and lower-case letters, numbers, and symbols as part of your password. Some sites, particularly those that deal with financial information, also require what is called "two-factor" authentication, which sends a text message to your phone with a code to use in addition to your password.

For additional options, the University of Illinois has an information page on password managers, and PC Magazine regularly reviews password managers
