*Philosophy: Find Books

This subject guide provides resources, including database information, journals, websites, and important organizations to assist research in the field of Philosophy.

Library Catalog Search

Find Books & DVDs:

Where to Begin

A good place to begin is by searching in Research Starter for articles or the catalog for books, CDs, and DVD's. You can also browse our shelves. For a quick overview of the general Philosophy reference books, you can see what the library has on hand here:

Philosophy Reference Collection

Books relating to Philosophy are generally found using the following call number ranges:

Philosophy 100
Metaphysics 110
Epistemology 120
Specific Philosophical Schools 140
Logic 160
Ethics (Moral, Philosophy, Bioethics) 170
Ancient, Medieval, Oriental Philosophy 180
Modern Western Philosophy 190
Philosophy & Theory of Religion 210

Most of these books can be found on the third floor of the Library.

You can find the books you are looking for by locating the tag on the end of each book shelf that indicates the number range of the books on that shelf. So, if you are looking for books on logic, for instance, just find the book shelf that contains books in the 160s.

Another great place to start when looking for information is by searching for articles in our databases. There is a databases tab at the top of the page that will provide a list of databases useful for finding information.

As always, if you are having trouble finding information or you want more guidance, just ask a librarian!
