Artificial Intelligence for College Students

Student Usage and AI

AI Tutorial

Luckily, recently, many technology companies have created AI programs and interfaces that are extremely user-friendly!

Step 1: Open the AI tool of your choice

Step 2: Prompt AI with what you want to do.

Step 3: Check answers for biases or inaccurate information.

Here are some prompts to try:

  • What is AI?
  • How does AI Work?
  • As a college student, how should I use AI?
  • Give me a fun fact.
  • Tell me a joke.
  • Summarize [your favorite book, movie, or show]

Writing Good Prompts

Generally, using AI is very simple, but it can take some work to get helpful responses to your prompt. Here are some pointers on how to get the best results:

  1. Be clear and specific- Tell the chat bot exactly what you want.Give it details like context, desired length and tone, format, etc. for what you want it to work on. Generally longer prompts written in full sentences preform better because the AI has more to go off of.
  2. Use natural language- Use the same verbiage you would use if you were telling another human to do something- AI chat bots are programmed to answer best with those prompts. But, be aware that AI may not be able to understand certain jargon or slang, so avoid using it.
  3. Ask follow-up questions- If the AI does something you don't like, ask for it to be changed. Ask why the program may have done certain things in its response. Make a conversation with the bot to get what you really want.
  4. Have the bot draw on specific information- Upload documents, give URLs, or copy and paste information for the AI to use.
  5. Give examples- Show the AI an example of what you want it to do. This will help it generative a response closer to what you are looking for.
  6. Try other chat bots- There are a ton of chat bots out there and they are all built slightly differently. If you find yourself not liking responses from one chat bot, try another one!
  7. Experiment- Try different things! Find a way to write prompts that makes sense to you.
