Student Usage and AI

AI Checklist

Before using AI, ask yourself these questions:

  • Do I understand how an AI tool works?
  • Does my professor allow the use of this tool?
    • Do I understand when and how I am allowed to use this tool for this assignment?
  • Do I properly understand the ethics of using AI tools?
    • Am I using my own thoughts, words, and voice?
    • Have a checked the sources AI has given me?
    • Have I analyzed the information AI has given me? Is any of it false, biased, or harmful?
  • Have I cited my use of AI properly?
    • Have I properly documented where and how I have used AI within the assignment?
    • Have I verified I have not used any confidential, protected, or copyrighted information?
  • Have I learned while doing this assignment?
    • Can I explain my findings and understanding of the topic without AI?
    • Can I show what sources I have used?
    • Have I gotten what I am meant to out of doing the assignment?

AI in School

AI tools can be used for just about anything, but here are a few tasks it does well:

Writing Assistance

  • Ask AI for topic ideas or brainstorming help when you’re stuck, but make sure you remain the author of your work.
  • Use AI to help you find the right word when one is on the tip of your tongue.
  • Have AI fix grammar or spelling mistakes and explain the corrections so you can learn and improve.
  • Get help adjusting the tone or style of your writing to better fit a specific audience, purpose, or situation.
  • Use AI to overcome writer’s block by generating prompts or suggestions while you stay in control of the final product.

Creative Assistance

  • Spark ideas for projects, stories, or artwork. Combine AI-generated suggestions with your own creativity.

Study Assistance

  • Create study guides based on topics or uploaded documents.
  • Use AI to quiz you and test your knowledge.
  • Plan a study or homework schedule for the day, week, or semester.

Research and Information Gathering

  • Have AI explain complex concepts clearly.
  • Summarize readings for clarity, but always read the original text for full understanding.

Data Analysis and Visualization

  • Analyze data sets efficiently with AI tools.
  • Generate custom visualizations to better understand your data.

AI Outside of School

AI isn't just an academic tool. Here are a few ways AI can be used outside of schoolwork:

  • Organize Your Schedule: Set up a calendar to plan and manage your daily tasks, appointments, and goals.
  • Build a Healthy Living Plan: Use AI to create a personalized plan that includes nutrition, exercise, and wellness strategies.
    • Plan Your Workouts: Generate exercise routines tailored to your fitness level, goals, and available time.
    • Design Meal Plans: Get balanced meal ideas that suit your dietary needs, preferences, and budget.
    • Reduce Stress: Find strategies and ideas to relax, unwind, and manage stress more effectively.
    • Improve Sleep Habits: Find ways to create a nighttime routine, improve sleep quality, and track progress over time.
  • Research Products: Evaluate products you’re interested in by comparing features, prices, and reviews.
  • Discover Entertainment: Find new movies, TV shows, books, or video games based on your interests and preferences.
  • Plan a Budget: Create a financial plan to manage expenses, savings, and spending goals.
  • Learn a New Skill: Use AI to find resources, tutorials, or schedules to help you pick up a new hobby or skill, like cooking, coding, or photography.
  • Plan a Trip: Generate travel itineraries, find attractions, and compare flights, hotels, or activities for your next adventure.
  • Organize Your Space: Get tips for decluttering and creating a clean, functional environment at home or work.
  • Set Goals and Track Progress: Develop a system to set short- or long-term goals and track your progress toward achieving them.
    • Track Habits: Set up tools or schedules to monitor and build healthy habits, like drinking water, reading, or meditating.
  • Find Volunteer Opportunities: Discover causes you care about and ways to get involved in your community.
