Collection Areas: MacCornack Mystery Novel Collection

MacCornack Collection

The MacCornack Mystery Novel Collection was donated to Hoover Library in 1998 by Mr. and Mrs. James MacCornack. The original donation consisted of nearly 800 volumes of English and American detective fiction from authors such as John Dickson Carr, Agatha Christie, Stuart Palmer, Phoebe Atwood Taylor, Leslie Ford among many others. Approximately 700 volumes remain in circulation while 89 have been moved to special collections. To view volumes in special collections, please contact the archivist.

Collection Highlights

John Dickson Carr

Golden Age author, John Dickson Carr (also known as Carr Dickson and Carter Dickson) has thirty-nine volumes in the MacCornack Collection, fourteen in special collections and twenty-six in circulation. Notable volumes include: a first edition The Problem of the Green Capsule (also known as The Black Spectacles) and first editions for Death Turns the Table and The Corpse in the Waxworks, among others. 

Dame Agatha Christie

The "Queen of Crime" has thirty-three volumes in the MacCornack Collection, thirteen in special collections and twenty circulating. Notable volumes include: first American editions of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd, Murder in the Calais Coach (also known as Murder on the Orient Express), Death on the Nile, Three Blind Mice and Other Stories, The Moving Finger, among others. 

Doris Miles Disney

The MacCornack Collection includes fifteen volumes by mystery author, Doris Miles Disney (no relation to Walt), including a first edition, Appointment at Nine

Erle Stanley Gardner

The creator of Perry Mason, has eighteen volumes in the MacCornack Collection, two in special collections and sixteen in circulation. One notable book is a first edition of The Case of the Angry Mourner

Dashiell Hammett

Author Dashiell Hammett has two volumes in the MacCornack Collection, including a first edition, fourth printing of his follow-up to The Maltese FalconThe Glass Key

Mary Roberts Rinehart

American author, Mary Roberts Rinehart, has thirteen volumes in circulation in the MacCornack Collection, including a copy of her earliest work, The Circular Staircase

Rex Stout

Creator of detective, Nero WolfeRex Stout has twenty-one volumes in the MacCornack Collection, all of which are in circulation. 

Arthur Upfield

Australian novelist, Arthur Upfield, has eighteen volumes in the MacCornack Collection, three in special collections and fifteen in circulation. Among those in special collections are first editions for The Devil's Steps, The Mystery of Swordfish Reef, and The Will of the Tribe
