LibGuides Standards & Best Practices: Creating a Guide

Creating a New Guide

  1. Get to the create guide screen: from the Home / Dashboard page, click Create Guide in the LibGuides Shortcuts box. Or go to Content > Guide from the orange commend bar and click the + Create Guide button at the top of the page.
  2. Choose Layout or Reuse: Start Fresh is selected by default - leave this as is.
  3. Click the Use system default template dropdown: scroll down to the Side-Nav Layout section and select New Website - side nav.
  4. Fill out the rest of the form:
    • Guide Name: Remember, keep it short & to the point! 
    • Guide Description: Optional. Again, keep it short & to the point.
    • Guide Type: Select the type of guide. This aids users in browsing through guides on the public side. 
    • Group Assignment: Select the appropriate group for your guide.
    • See Guide Type & Name for assistance. 
  5. Password: Do not add a password! Password-protected guides can only be viewed by people who know the password.
  6. Share Guide Content:
    • No - Nobody is allowed to copy the guide (including yourself).
    • Internal - All McDaniel librarians can copy your guide. Recommended for sensitive content.
    • Community - People using LibGuides anywhere can copy your guide.
  7. Click Create Guide.

  2. Choose Layout or Reuse dropdown: select Copy content / layout from an existing guide.
    • Choose Local Guides (your guides & your coworkers' guides) or Community Guides (searches all LibGuides v2 sites) to narrow your search.
    • Click in the "Select a guide" box and start typing the name of the guide.
    • Select the guide from the search results.
  3. Fill out the rest of the form:
    • Guide Name: Remember, keep it short & to the point! 
    • Guide Description: Optional. Again, keep it short & to the point.
    • Guide Type: Select the type of guide. This aids users in browsing through guides on the public side. 
    • Group Assignment: Select the appropriate group for your guide.
    • See Guide Type & Name for assistance. 
  4. Password: Do not add a password! Password-protected guides can only be viewed by people who know the password.
  5. Share Guide Content:
