LibGuides Standards & Best Practices: Guide Type & Name

Type, Group, and Subjects

  • Group - all public guides must be assigned to the Research Guides group. Guides intended for library staff use only should not be added to any group.
  • Type - use one of the following, depending on the purpose of your guide:
    • Subject Guide:  guides for a campus department or discipline (eg: Biology, History).
    • Course Guide: guides designed for a specific course (eg: EDU 550 - Introduction to Research Methodology).
    • Topic Guide: guides not related to a specific department or course (eg: Citation Guides, Electronic Books).
    • Internal Guide: guides intended for library staff use only (eg: Public Services - Procedures & Policy, LibGuides Standards & Best Practices). 
  • Subject - Subject and course guides should be assigned at least one subject, based on college-approved departments or disciplines. If you think your guide should be assigned to a subject that does not exist, please contact David or Elizabeth and they can add an appropriate subject to the system.

Naming Conventions

  • Use short, descriptive names. Avoid jargon. 
  • Guide names should identify the guide subject or topic.
    • Biology
    • Citation Guides
  • Course guides should include the course ID, course title, and (optionally) professor's last name.
    • EDU 550 - Introduction to Research Methodology
    • FYS 1108 - From Chaos to Compromise (McKay)
  • Page and box names should describe the content of the page or box.
  • Avoid vague terms such as "Additional Resources" or "Other".
