Circulation Assistant Student - Job Description

Position: Circulation Assistant Student Worker
Reports to: Circulation and Reserves Manager, Peggy Klinge
Department: Library
Salary Grade: Tier I
FSLA Status: Non-exempt 

 

The Student Circulation Assistant is responsible for providing information assistance and circulation services to library patrons.  Students are also responsible for general stacks maintenance and any other duties that may be assigned by supervisor.

 

Responsibilities:

  • Works at Circulation Desk, checking materials in and out, using an automated library system.

  • Arrange books to be reshelved in numerical order on the designated shelving carts.
  • Pulls reserve materials and checks out items when requested by student patrons.
  • Registers campus borrowers into the library system.
  • Explains library policy and answers directional questions in order to better inform library patrons.
  • Shelves library materials, including reserve materials, accurately.
  • Shelf reads and conducts inventory of assigned areas of library collection
  • Assists with opening and closing procedures of the library.
  • Performs other duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, be able to work well as part of a team and follow oral and written directions.

  • Must be punctual, dependable and able to work without direct supervision.
  • Must be able to work with a diverse group of library patrons
  • Must be flexible in scheduling, including being available to work evening, late night until 2:00AM, and weekend hours when required, and being available to substitute for other student employees as needed.

Physical Characteristics:

  • This position requires sitting for long periods of time as well as some bending and stooping when shelving books. This position does have some limited lifting involved, but not more than 10 pounds at a time. The overall setting of the job is in an area conducive to a normal office environment with minimal exposure to adverse conditions.
