Graduate Assistant - Job Description

Position: Hoover Library Graduate Assistant

Accountability and Scope:  This is a 125 hours per semester position responsible for overall supervision and security of the library building and operation of its online circulation system and services on as needed during the academic year. This position supervises student assistants, checks out and checks in library materials, collaborates with the Information Literacy Coordinator on instruction and assessment efforts, registers campus and non-campus patrons, and helps users locate and use library resources.

The position reports to the Head of Public Services and the Circulation and Reserves Manager.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide basic reference services and research assistance when no reference staff are present.
  • Participate in ongoing library projects that are beyond the scope of the normal circulation student assistant responsibilities including, but not limited to: design of library displays using archival materials, overseeing data assessment of library instruction statistics, and supporting the Information Literacy Coordinator in the classroom.
  • Serve as a communication liaison between student circulation assistants and library staff during weekend and evening hours, occasionally acting as weekend back-up for the circulation supervisor.
  • Work with the College Archivist & Special Collections Librarian to create one display per semester using McDaniel’s historical resources.
  • Check out and check in library materials.
  • Register campus and non-campus patrons.
  • Assist users in finding and using library resources.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

This position requires a reliable and motivated individual capable of working responsibly and productively without immediate direct supervision. Excellent oral communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with a diverse clientele are required.

Applicants must be willing to work a flexible schedule including weekends and late night hours.

Special Requirements:

  • Ability to manage the work of student assistants when no other staff are present.
  • Analytical skills required to manage operations beyond what is expected of student employees.
  • Must be willing to take initiative to creatively and effectively solve problems that arise, especially during evening and weekend hours, in addition to reporting problems to the appropriate authority.
  • Must be flexible in scheduling, including being available to work evening and weekend hours when required.
  • Must commit to working 125 hours during the course of the semester in order to fulfill the requirement of the graduate assistantship. 
  • Must have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, be able to work well as part of a team and follow oral and written directions.
  • Must be punctual, dependable and able to work without direct supervision.
  • Must be able to work with a diverse group of library patrons.
